Duke Football Position By Position – Linebacker

Duke Football 2017 Match Preview Prediction and Players: Linebacker will be a position of strength for Duke this coming season. With two All ACC quality players, Ben Humphreys (6’2″ 225) and Joe Giles-Harris (6’2″ 230) leading the way, expectations are high in Durham for 2017. In 2016, Humphreys was selected 3rd Team All ACC while Giles-Harris was Honorable Mention. Giles-Harris was also selected Freshman All America by USA Today and Campus Insiders.

Duke runs the 4-2-5 defense, which means two linebackers are on the field, and both starters, the aforementioned Humphreys and Giles-Harris, return from last season, when they led the team in tackles. Giles-Harris recorded 107 (55 solo) tackles while Humphreys added 106 (51 solo). They combined for 20.5 tackles for loss, eight and one half sacks, three fumbles recoverd and two interceptions. A key ingredient to linebackers achieving success is defensive linemen demanding double teams. When the opponent’s offensive line has to double team one or two guys up front, the linebackers are left free to pursue and catch running backs, quarterbacks and receivers. Both defensive line performance and recruiting have seen an uptick the past couple years, which is good news for the linebacking corps.

Graduate assistant coach Cory Beck, football operations assistants Justin Manning and Gerad Parker and football assistant director of information technology Andy Parham are the newcomers at Duke, the school announced Wednesday. Parker, 36, had spent the previous four seasons (2013-16) at Purdue, including a term as interim head coach for the final six weeks of the 2016 campaign. The Boilermakers lost all six games with Parker at the helm. Parker was charged with DUI earlier this year in West Lafayette, Ind.

Parker, a former Kentucky player, was hired as running backs coach at Cincinnati in the winter. Then he was set to switch to join the East Carolina staff under former Duke player and assistant coach Scottie Montgomery. That employment opportunity was nixed following the February arrest, according to published reports. Duke assistant head coach Jim Bridge, in his second season at Duke, was on Purdue’s staff with Parker prior to coming to Durham.

Cincinnati hired Parker as its running backs coach in January but Parker left the Bearcats in February intending to join East Carolina’s staff as wide receivers coach for Pirates heads coach Scottie Montgomery, a former Duke Football 2017 player, and assistant coach. Parker’s role won’t include recruiting or on-field work with players. Beck, who’ll be on the offensive side, spent four seasons (2013-16) as an undergraduate assistant coach at Purdue. A native of Arcadia, Ind., Beck graduated from Purdue in 2017 with a bachelor’s degree in agribusiness management and is pursuing a master’s degree in liberal studies.

Manning, who’s from Raleigh and graduated from North Carolina Central, spent the 2016 season as a cornerbacks coach at Tufts. He played as a fullback N.C. Central from 2008-11. A Durham native, Parham returned to his hometown after serving as the director of the football video at South Alabama during the 2016 season. He is a 2013 East Carolina graduate.
